My first impression of Matthew Yglesias' blog was that his writing seemed to be a bit on the "random side." I soon realized his blogs are extremely insightful and thought provoking. He offers personal analysis and opinion on current issues including politics, world news, transportation, employment and foreign policy. You name it, Yglesias covers it. Not so random afterall, I guess.
The most recent blog entry, Endgame, is basically a list of six ideas about different American issues. Each bullet point gives one simple opinion on the topic, with a link to the article or Web site where it originated. He is not shy about his point of view and obviously provokes thought and controversy – he seems to get an abundance of responses/comments from followers.
Most of his blogs are similar in format – he offers his personal analysis on news and current issues. Occasionally I see original reporting, but it is rare and usually comes from the reports by other journalists and bloggers.
His blog is one of several others that offer similar progressive ideas relating to American current events. Yglesias, The Wonk Room, Climate Progress, Science Progress and Think Progress are blogs for the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to “improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action.”
Yglesias has previous work experience as the Associate Editor at The Atlantic, a Staff Writer at The American Prospect, and an Associate Editor at Talking Points Memo. He has contributed to several publications including The New York Times and Slate, and has appeared on Fox News and MSNBC. He published his first book in 2008 and graduated from Harvard University with a BA in philosophy.
Yglesias’ progressive ideas about random and current events absolutely intrigues me. The blog will probably open my eyes to new ideas; to "think progress."
