Capital Notes - Web Design

Recently "Capital Notes" has been somewhat inactive due to the birth of the author's second child. The latest post by John Myers, was to inform the readers that he is still going to be reporting on the blog, but will be stepping back a bit for the next couple weeks for paternal leave. Myers posted a picture of the newborn, along with an apology for the lack of posts recently.

As far as the blog's use of screen real estate, about 30% is used for content. The rest is used for information about Myers and the title of the site. Luckily, there is no advertising taking up space and causing a distraction.
The fonts are simple, good size and easy to follow. The titles are orange, links are blue and everything else is black. There are no background graphics so the text is very easy to read.

I am using cable internet with a wireless modem at home and the response time for Capital Notes was very fast, about 1.0 second or less.

The blog does not use ALT text attributes or frames. There are no advertisements on the site, however there is a link to KQED's website and a link to The California Report, a radio news show for KQED.

Myers typically uses many different links throughout his blogs so readers can easily navigate through the site and access a document or a helpful site to learn more about what is being reported. Capital Notes uses structural navigation links to access specific blog posts, his bio, the home page and to read more. Associative links are used to access external sites that are referenced in the story. For example, Myers wrote a story about the oil situation in California and referenced Proposition 87. He used that as a link to a PDF file on the Prop 87, so readers who were unsure of the details, could read about it. The links are in blue text to distinguish it from the rest of the black text. The links are very useful and provide extra information to fully understand a story and allow the reader to make his/her own decision on the issue.
