Marcy Wheeler's Emptywheel blog scores much better on this week’s scale. Her use of screen real estate is almost dead on, with a 70-30 percent content to ad ratio. While it should be closer to 80-20 percent, she is well over the 50 percent minimum, something that surprised me after my review of last week's posts.
One area that needs improvement is the fact that the ads rotate and are a bit distracting for the reader. However, one is self-serving, advertising for a fundraiser to benefit Wheeler and her many writing efforts. The fundraiser has a goal of raising $150,000.
The font used work and fit the provided guidelines, but the colors are a bit mooted, with light blues and browns. A basic black or more exaggerated color scheme would have been more enticing, or at least more readable.
The site loaded within seconds, a surprise, as I accessed it from the Mendocino Computer Lab using Safari.
The links are placed well, and refer to the topic being discussed. All links go directly to the sources or articles being used, which is helpful since most of her commentary is based on outside sources, not original reporting.
The page does not use frames, but does make good use of white space, which makes it more readable for Wheeler's office.
Wheeler's latest post relates to President's Obama's statements to the National Counter Terrorism Center. This time, Wheeler gives Obama credit for avoiding the Patriot Act, and instead focusing on unity of mission and thanking the Center. There wasn't much to review with this post, as the bulk of it was a simple re-posting of his comments.
